Here are 2 key things about air filters will make sure you are only changing them when you need to.
There are 2 types of air filters in a vehicle—the cabin air filter, and the engine air filter. It is important to regularly change both, as they serve very different purposes.
The cabin air filter (pictured on right) is a very important part of the air circulation system in your car. It not only ensures that dust and dirt are kept from entering the cabin, it also filters out pollen, allergens and other irritants and contaminants. This means a cleaner, healthier environment for you and your family, and a cleaner interior for your car, as well.
How often should a cabin air filter be changed? Each car is different, and manufacturers suggest the cabin air filter be changed at least once a year, but definitely after the end of the Monsoons. You made need to change it more frequently if you are driving on dusty roads, or in areas with heavy air pollution, as well as if transporting furry pets regularly.
The engine air filter (see picture below) is a very important part of the mechanics of your car. Your engine needs clean air to run efficiently. If you’re like most people, you probably don’t think about your car’s air filter often, unless you’re told that it’s dirty while getting your oil changed or having other maintenance done. But did you know that changing your air filter can increase your car’s fuel efficiency and extend its engine life?
Optimally, the air filter’s job is to deliver 10,000 gallons of clean air to the engine for every gallon of gas burned in the engine. As outside air flows through it, it becomes filled with pollen, dust and debris. On an older model vehicle, a clogged air filter won’t allow enough air to enter the engine, and this can affect the performance of your vehicle over time. In Arizona, this can be at 6 or 8,000 gallons if traveling in dust regularly.
Because the air filter sits inside a black box (or a metal housing on older vehicles) it tends to be easy to ignore. Even if your car’s fuel efficiency starts to decrease, or the “Service Engine” light comes on, the air filter may not be the first thing that comes to mind.
